Update: Built-In Desk - 7/06/05

I began work on the built in desk. I attached some 2x4s to the wall, leveled, and will attach an oak finished plywood on top, add some storage to the right, and shelving to the left for electronics. We'll also build a built-in bookshelf on the wall as well.

Update: Built-in Desk - 8/13/05

The Built-in Desktop sits on leveled 2x4s attached to the wall. The span of the desk is 7'6". In order to make sure the desk remains level and doesn't sag, we put a 3/4" ply on the bottom and attached (glued/stapled) a 3/4" oak/plywood on top and nailed them into the 2x4s. We also put metal brackets underneath to offer long term support and attached a 1 1/2" x 1" oak border on front to add further support and hide the face of the two plywoods.

As Bill and I worked on the desk, Dea got pulled in and started removing base boards in anticipation of the entertainment center.

Update: Built-In Desk - 9/20/05

The next major section of the desk portion of the project is to put up the rather large bookshelf above the built in desk. After Bill cut the sections of the bookshelf and cut out the areas for the biscuits.

I needed to create a way to make the holes for the adjustable shelves. So, I took a piece of 1 x 3 and measured, marked and drilled holes. I then clamped them to each piece of wood and marked the holes. I then drilled out each hole carefully, only going as deep as required.

Afterwards, my daughter and I glued and clamped the bookshelf. As it was drying overnight, clamps in place to keep the bookshelf square loosened, leaving it looking like a trapazoid. So, before attaching the backing to the bookshelf, we put it on the desk and shimmed against the wall, forcing the bookshelf square again... no easy task. We then attached the 3/4" backing, which held it in place going forward.

I carefully drilled the holes to the proper depth. I know
there are devices out there that make this part easier, but I
didn't own any of them.

The bookshelf skeleton after my daugheter and I
glued it, clamped and and squared it.

With the help of my wife and a neighbor, we lifted this heavy
bookshelf onto a saw horse on top of the desk so we could attach
it to the studs in the wall.

We attached the bookshelf to the wall and stained it. You can see
that, since the wall was not square, we left some space on
either side. This would be covered later.

The next part is to put a computer drawer in place for the
keyboard and mouse.

Here you can see the computer drawer slid back into place.

Here you can see hte desk and bookshelf stained.

Here the desk next to the entertainment center. I still have to create
some storage, drawers below the desktop.
