MUTE - A man's hostage girlfriend will die if he speaks to anyone.
STATUS 20% Complete
11/21/01 - Writing still continues. The weird part about trying to write this script isn't writers block or anything like that... it's the format by which I've decided to tell the story. I know what has to happen when and how all of the characters are interrelated. The struggle I'm having is relaying that information in the unique format by which I've determined is best to tell the story. It's the biggest challenge I've had as a writer. It's been difficult, but I will continue on. And, since Thanksgiving is just a few days away, I'm pushing back my completion date to Christmas. I hope I can finish the first draft by then.
10/22/01 - Writing continues. About 50% done on first draft. The highly visual nature of the story is making the writing process more lenghty than a normal first draft would take. But, we're very excited about the storyline and hope to finish the first draft by Thanksgiving.
06/18/01 - Started Writing First Draft

Production Notes: The inspiration for this script came from a three sources. 1) The success of Justice, which was shot with no dialogue or sound, only music. Making Justice was very satisfying because it forced me to think visually and I wanted to continue that in the next project.
2) Putting someone in a situation where they are unable to speak can create some terrificly suspenseful moments. Try going to lunch with someone and not say anything. Try having to avoid engaging in a conversation with a friend or even a stranger. It makes people uncomfortable. I hope to translate that emotion onto the audience.
3) Part of the limitations facing a no-budget filmmaker is the range of acting abilities of the people who will participate in the project. Understanding that, I wanted to limit the amount of speaking that anyone, especially the main character, would do. The main character will be on the screen almost the entire film. If they don't have the "acting chops" to pull it off through dialogue, then you have to create a situation where the actor will succeed in that role... so by limiting the amount of dialogue I can illicit a more complete performance from camera angles, editing and facial expressions.
Now whether I can pull this off successfully is another story all together, but it'll be fun trying!
