THE BUSINESS TRIP - This short is second part of a triology of shorts dealing with Hitmen. Part I is the short Raw Footage and Part III is a short called 10 Reasons.

In The Business Trip a bored business traveller takes the identity of his corporate apartment's previous tenant, only to find himself the target of a beautiful Hitman... errr, Hit Person.

Impact on My Life: A nice creative lift and a worthy project. It is certainly satisfying considering the amount of effort it took to shoot and edit it. It was actually pretty simple. Just goes to show you how quick you can shoot something in a single location where you control almost all of the elements. That's what gives me hope that 10 REASONS could be done in a weekend as well. I'm very glad we did it. I liked expanding the relationship with another actor (Colleen), getting Brian a larger role than he had in THE BOX and getting Susan Alexander in there, even in a small role. I have to get her in more projects. She's very natural. A good experience and I think the end product is very funny.click here

STATUS 100% Complete
6/20/05 - Edit is complete! YEAH!
5/24/05 - Added Screenshots to the website.

McDonnell, as Nicole, is ready to fire.

5/19/05 - A potential three-day shoot turned into an exhausting one-day shoot that commenced on Sunday, 5/15. The 14 hour marathon left everyone exhausted, but we were able to get the project in the can. You can see pictures and read more about the shoot day at our Behind-the-Scenes page.

Bauer blocks the scene as McDonnell holds a
prop gun to Shea's head.

4/26/05 - Read Thru held with cast at Bauer's house. Brian Shea and Colleen McDonnell lead the effort as Scott, the traveller, and Nicole, the hitperson, while Susan Alexander joins the fray as Amy, the apartment manager. Shooting slated for May 15th and 16th.

2/15/05 - Added a teaser poster for The Business Trip. Simple and cool.
2/14/05 - Wow, has it really been four years??? Amazing! Well, after a unplanned hiatus from filmmaking, we were looking for a simple project that could fit into a short shooting period... preferably over a single weekend. After scouring our unused scripts, this one seemed the best candidate. Bauer, having been working in the one-act play Live Alligator Wrestling, has contacted some local actors to see if they are interested in participating in the project. The script was tweaked and sent out to potential cast today.
10/22/01 - This project is currently, and more than likely permanently, shelved. Cast could not commit and more important projects have come to the forefront.
07/03/01 - Completed Final Draft of Script
07/03/01 - Principal Cast has determined. Tim Osterhoust and Diana Bispo have agreed to play the primary roles.

Production Notes: This is the second part of a trilogy of short films dealing with Hitmen. The first film was the partly successful Raw Footage. This story for this segment of the trilogy was partially based on my own experiences. Not so much with being hunted by a Hitman, but with having to deal with the incredible boredom associated with business travel. Of course, while sitting bored to tears in a corporate apartment in Auburn Hills, Michigan six years ago, my mind started spinning a story of "what if..." - like, what if I were to take the identity of the person that stayed in the corporate apartment before me... what kind of trouble would I get into... and that's how the origins of this short started. I wrote about three drafts of this script, never really satisfied. It's light-weight, but it has good humor and some nice twists, so I think the end product should be fine.

Hard Facts - The project was scheduled to shoot over a two to three day shooting period. Due to last minute scheduling changes, the shoot ended up taking place over a single day. After 14 hours, some pizza and a thorough case of complete exhaustion, the shoot was done. It took another three weeks to complete the edit.

Critical Assessment - The project is very good considering the limitatoins. There are some things I really want to improve on with the next project. 1) I need a cinematographer. Using existing lighting and a flood lamp is not cutting it for me anymore. 2) Audio. One thing I've learned with THE BOX and THE BUSINESS TRIP is that, when recording, men's voices are deeper and more clear than women's voices. I end up having to bump up the female voices to compensate, which adds more background noise. I try to clear it up, but it still needs to be cleaner when initially recorded on set. The script is funny, the directing competent and the actos very good. Brian Shea was very funny and Colleen had this great ability to be ditsy/innocent, then turn threatening, then turn scary/weird, all within the character. And the proper use of the dolly really helps. There are about five dolly shots in the film and you don't really notice any of them, which is the way it should be. So, good, considering our limitations. But I hate having to say "considering our limitations."
