Okay, Dr. Gee has spotted the vial of contagion, fought off a Thug, dove and saved the vial from crashing onto the ground... now the last part of this scene in the script is as follows:

Section Three

Now, those couple lines of action in the script have turned into another 12 shots, as seen below.

The bullet rips through Gee's chest.

We tried to shoot this, but the blood
would not show up against the background...
it went too fast. So, we'll use the sound effect
of a GUNSHOT plus this reaction from Gee

The Thug stands with the smoking gun.

Where Gee tries to save the vial, I wanted to show that in slow motion, as to extend the suspense. However, when Gee gets shot, I want the vial to smash quickly on the ground, to jar the audience, as well as the people in the lab. In spite of all of the violence going on in the room, the distinct sound of the vial breaking immediately gets everyone's attention... they know something VERY bad has happened. Once they realize the contagion has been released, the Thugs and Chemists fight to get out of the room before it's too late. Will they make it? Well, you'll have to see the movie to find out!

So, a simple section of the script, about a third of a page, translated to over 30 separate shots. The book of scenes and storyboards for The Box is over 500 pages, with over 1264 different shots. No wonder my hand aches!

Well, I hope this process has shown you the steps it takes to go from the writing stage to the shooting stage. When we actually shoot this scene, I'll revisit this and add how the reality of production may/may not have changed the goal as sketched out in the storyboards.
